How to Spot a Deal vs a Marketing Trick

Saving money is our number one priority. This means honestly and transparency. What I have found is many stores will offer deals like Buy One, Get One or Spend $25 Get $5. To a normal shopper, this sounds like a great deal especially when you remember the days of Payless Shoes BOGO sale. Am I aging myself with that reference. Anyway, I digress.

How to Understand Deals

Let’s get back to it, Buy One, Get One in stores are not always Buy One, Get One Free it is usually some percentage off and we get tricked into buying 2 items thinking it is a great deal. Here is the true breakdown. When a store says Buy 1, Get 1 50% off this actually is a discount of 25% off of each product. If the product is $10 full price the second item of the same product will be $5. You will spend $15 out of product. This $15 might be more than you wanted to spend originally, or you may not need the second product, so you buy more to get the better deal.

This logic is the same with the Spend $25, get $5 off. At the price point of $25 it is a savings of 20%. However, for every dollar you spent additional makes that $5 less and less valuable. Hence many videos you will have a cut off at $26 or $27 to make that $5 count.

My takeaway

So here is my advice, all couponing sites with a grain of salt. Ask yourself before you buy, is this something you need? Is this something you use all the time? Is this something that will have a long shelf life? If the answer is YES, buy it. If the answer is No, or possibly then hold off because next week will always be another deal.

In the meantime, I will keep letting you know what options are out there. I will also let you know what I found for the best deals. For example: the best deal this week is at CVS. Check out our other articles for March 16-23 breakdown.
